Connectionist Music Composition Based on Melodic and Stylistic Constraints

چکیده
Todd Soukup Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Colorado Boulder, CO 80309-0425 We describe a recurrent connectionist network, called CONCERT, that uses a set of melodies written in a given style to compose new melodies in that style. CONCERT is an extension of a traditional algorithmic composition technique in which transition tables specify the probability of the next note as a function of previous context. A central ingredient of CONCERT is the use of a psychologically-grounded representation of pitch.

FreshJam: Suggesting Continuations of Melodic Fragments in a Specific Style
Imagine that a budding composer suffers from writer’s block partway through devising a melody. A system called FreshJam is demonstrated, which offers a solution to this problem in the form of an interactive composition assistant; an algorithm that analyzes the notes composed so far, makes a comparison with an indexed corpus of existing music, and suggests a possible next note by choosing random...
متن کاملPerceptual basis of evolving Western musical styles.
The brain processes temporal statistics to predict future events and to categorize perceptual objects. These statistics, called expectancies, are found in music perception, and they span a variety of different features and time scales. Specifically, there is evidence that music perception involves strong expectancies regarding the distribution of a melodic interval, namely, the distance between...
متن کاملRethinking Gestal Onmelodic Exp
The implication-realisation model of melodic expectancy (Narmour, 1990) posits two independent cognitive systems: one which reflects the top-down influences of acquired stylistic knowledge; and another which consists of innate melodic schemata based on the Gestalt principles. While there exists empirical support for both aspects of the model, the results presented here question the need to invo...
متن کامل"If You Have to Ask, You'll Never Know": Effects of Specialised Stylistic Expertise on Predictive Processing of Music
Musical expertise entails meticulous stylistic specialisation and enculturation. Even so, research on musical training effects has focused on generalised comparisons between musicians and non-musicians, and cross-cultural work addressing specialised expertise has traded cultural specificity and sensitivity for other methodological limitations. This study aimed to experimentally dissociate the e...
متن کاملFreedom within Structural Constraints in the darkride Composition Harrican Day
The immediate goal of the DarkRide music software project is to develop a self-contained computer application in C++ that allows composers to generate original, incompletely specified, pattern-based compositions. A piece of music composed with DarkRide may consist purely of a hierarchy of programmed indications of musical elements such as melodic and harmonic structures, rhythmic motifs, and dy...
